Asimov, Isaac

Isaac Asimov was born in Petrovichi, Russia, in 1920, but his family emigrated to New York when he was very young. Author of over 500 books in his lifetime, he is known as a legend in science fiction and in the sciences. He grew up reading the pulp magazines of the 1930's, which inspired him to write his own stories. He wrote in various and many different genres (sf, mysteries, non-fiction, young adult). He edited and co-wrote quite a few works as well (some with his second wife, Janet). His most famous works include the Foundation series, the Robots series (he is the inventor of the three laws of robotics), the classic short stories, Nightfall and The Bicentennial Man, as well as many "Asimov's Guide to..." books (including Shakespeare and the Bible). A brilliant, accomplished man, he was awarded with a total of fourteen honorary doctorates from various universities during his life. He passed away in 1992.

Jane Austen was born in England in 1775. She wrote six complete novels before her death in 1817 and was said to be one of King George IV's favourite authors. Her novels are still well-read to this day and she has achieved a kind of fame she never could have dreamed of, as all her works have been adapted for the screen at least once.

British-born, US-resident Neil Gaiman is probably most famous for his award-winning series of Sandman comics, which is considered by many to be one of the greatest achievements in comic writing. His work extends well beyond the comic book realm, though, into adult novels, short stories, children's novels, picture books, and screenwriting.

Handler, Daniel

Daniel Handler, also known as Lemony Snicket, is an American author, screenwriter, and accordionist. A native San Franciscan, alumnus of the San Francisco Boys Chorus, and graduate of Wesleyan University. His novels are The Basic Eight and Watch Your Mouth; they are comedies with a Gothic mood and rather adult subject matter. As "Lemony Snicket," Handler has written a series of children's novels, A Series of Unfortunate Events, but the man who starts out as a narrator becomes a character in the series, even writing a book entitled Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography. He has also written two additional works as Snicket, a comic about a Yeti in It Was a Dark and Silly Night, a volume of Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouly's Little Lit series, and a holiday short story entitled "The Lump of Coal."

Richler, Mordecai

Richler, Mordecai

Born in 1931 in Montreal, Richler wrote huge but personal novels about the experience of growing up Jewish in Quebec. Considered one of Canada's greatest authors, he was also a (usually controversial) commentator on Canadian politics and a writer of some pretty successful children's stories (Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang). He died in 2003.

William Shakespeare, aka The Bard, was a British playwright/poet who lived in the late 1500's/early 1600's. He wrote dozens of plays, over 150 sonnets, and a number of poems. He is considered one of the only playwrights to excel in both comic and tragic stories. He is also one of the most quoted authors in the all of literature. Some of his most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, etc.
