Isaac Asimov was born in Petrovichi, Russia, in 1920, but his family emigrated to New York when he was very young. Author of over 500 books in his lifetime, he is known as a legend in science fiction and in the sciences. He grew up reading the pulp magazines of the 1930's, which inspired him to write his own stories. He wrote in various and many different genres (sf, mysteries, non-fiction, young adult). He edited and co-wrote quite a few works as well (some with his second wife, Janet). His most famous works include the Foundation series, the Robots series (he is the inventor of the three laws of robotics), the classic short stories, Nightfall and The Bicentennial Man, as well as many "Asimov's Guide to..." books (including Shakespeare and the Bible). A brilliant, accomplished man, he was awarded with a total of fourteen honorary doctorates from various universities during his life. He passed away in 1992.

Born as the eighth child to sharecroppers in 1944, Alice Walker is mostly known for her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Color Purple. She is both an author and an activist, having participated in the Civil Rights, women's, and anti-nuclear movements, as well as educating others as to the hazards of female genital mutilation. She attended Spelman College and Sarah Lawrence College; earning her bachelor of arts from the latter.
