Author Recommendations: Reality
Isaac Asimov was born in Petrovichi, Russia, in 1920, but his family emigrated to New York when he was very young. Author of over 500 books in his lifetime, he is known as a legend in science fiction and in the sciences. He grew up reading the pulp magazines of the 1930's, which inspired him to write his own stories. He wrote in various and many different genres (sf, mysteries, non-fiction, young adult). He edited and co-wrote quite a few works as well (some with his second wife, Janet). His most famous works include the Foundation series, the Robots series (he is the inventor of the three laws of robotics), the classic short stories, Nightfall and The Bicentennial Man, as well as many "Asimov's Guide to..." books (including Shakespeare and the Bible). A brilliant, accomplished man, he was awarded with a total of fourteen honorary doctorates from various universities during his life. He passed away in 1992.

Carol Shields was born in Illinois in 1935 but arrived in Canada as a university student (she got her Master's at the University of Ottawa), married a Canadian, and lived in Canada for the rest of her life, teaching at a few different universities. A mother of five, Shields was known for writing stories about the everyday lives of people, mostly women. Her best-known work is probably The Stone Diaries, which won the Pulitzer Prize. Shields was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998 and eventually died of the disease in 2003. Her final novel, Unless, was published in 2002.
